This project introduces Yerevan’s second major transport ring, a strategic piece of infrastructure designed to ease the pressure on the city’s central streets. The proposal expands existing highways from Aygestani 12th Street to Tsovakal Isakov Avenue and links them with a series of newly built bridges and overpasses. By completing these missing connections, the transport ring forms a continuous loop that strengthens metropolitan mobility and redistributes traffic more efficiently across the capital.
The system is engineered to function without traffic lights, allowing vehicles to move freely through uninterrupted flows. This approach reduces congestion in the central districts, decreases wait times at intersections, and supports a more predictable mobility pattern throughout the city. The design improves connections between major arterial roads while avoiding disruptions to the historic urban fabric.
Beyond transportation performance, the project opens opportunities for expanding green spaces, creating new public areas, and improving overall urban livability. By relocating heavy traffic away from dense central neighborhoods, the ring enables the gradual transformation of several inner-city zones into pedestrian-friendly corridors. These reclaimed spaces can support green infrastructure, tree planting, and better air quality – key goals in Armenia’s current focus on public health and climate-responsive urban planning.
The improved roadway network also contributes to economic development. Enhanced connectivity stimulates investment, improves access to peripheral districts, and strengthens the value of adjacent properties. Underused areas gain new development potential, while existing housing districts benefit from reduced noise pollution and safer, calmer streets.
Once completed, the second transport ring functions as a fully integrated mobility system, capable of supporting both current traffic demands and Yerevan’s long-term urban growth. By removing heavy through-traffic from the city center, the ring creates space for new pedestrian zones, recreational areas, and community-oriented landscapes. The project ultimately supports a more balanced, healthy, and sustainable urban environment, aligning with contemporary priorities in transport planning and city development across Armenia.
